For the past ten years she has lived in Los Angeles, where she has studied Early Childhood Education at UCLA and directed the Berlitz Language Center in Beverly Hills. Currently, in addition to writing the Jadyn series, she owns and runs a preschool and reviews children's books for magazines. Brigitte has traveled to more than twenty-five countries and speaks three languages fluently. She finds fiction--like travel--a fun, interactive way for children and adults alike to learn about real concepts. How did Jadyn come alive? Relaxing with a magazine in a warm bubble bath, she was struck by a picture of a child blowing a bubble. That picture inspired the whole Jadyn series. Jadyn is the name of a student at her school who never left without saying goodbye. The purpose of the Jadyn series is to open new horizons to children and to help them learn more about themselves in the process.

Marianne Berkes’ award-winning picture books “sing of nature”. She loves the sights and sounds of animals and has combined “fact “ with fiction in five beautifully illustrated books for children. A former teacher, librarian and children’s theater director, Marianne brings all those experiences to good use. In Over in the Ocean, in a Coral Reef, she created a counting book with a musical element. Illustrated by Jeanette Canyon, the amazing colors and shapes of a coral reef are done in polymer clay, which Kirkus called “eye popping”. Published in October 2004, this book has won six awards and is on a number of State Library Best Picture Book Lists. It was also voted one of the best picture books for 2005 by Bank Street College of Education. In March 2006 it was released in a board book Version for the very young, and recently won the FRA honor Children’s Book Award for 2006-2007. Ms. Berkes was a featured speaker at the annual FRA Conference in October 2006 and has been invited to speak at the Annual FAME conference (Florida Association of Media Educators) in October 2007.

Marianne’s latest “interactive” book, Over in the Jungle, released in March 2007, is another collaboration with illustrator Jeanette Canyon. The remarkable art is again done with polymer clay. It combines music, counting, and body movements as children mimic the rain forest animals. School Library Journal (May2007) called it “a handsome book on an important subject, and it can serve as recreational reading as well as an introduction to a basic unit on the rain forest”.

Marianne is an active member of SCBWI (society of children’s book Writers and Illustrators). She also belongs to the Authors Guild and IRA and FRA. A sixth book about the planets will be released In 2008. Ms. Berkes is a favorite presenter at schools and conferences and lives on the east coast of Florida with her husband, Roger.

Etan Boritzer

Etan Boritzer

What is Right? What is Love? What is Death? What is Beautiful? What is Funny? What is God? What is Money? What is Peace? What is Dreaming?

Appearances
Thursday afternoon – Beachland Elementary School
Friday morning – Highlands Elementary School
Friday afternoon – Thompson Magnet Elementary School
Saturday – Kid’s Street in the Festival Marketplace

Website: www.veronicalanebooks.com

In a series of books that began in 1989, author Etan Boritzer challenges parents – who are likely to read these books to their children – and kids to address some of the most important questions of their lives.

In What is Right? Boritzer asks, “But how does your conscience know that is right?” He tells of friends dealing with the moral question of taking what is not theirs, siblings doing less than their agreed-upon share of yard work, and broader problems of ethical decision making. “Nobody really knows where this little voice called our conscience comes from, but sometimes people call it the voice of the heart.”

What is Funny? deals with the social context of humor. Are clown’s pratfalls funny? How about tickles? Boritzer takes us through smiles, laughs and the good feelings we had growing up in a loving home. Some may laugh at the anomalous – not because it is funny, but because you never saw anybody like that before. Is laughing at people we don’t understand really funny? Really funny things don’t hurt anybody.

Published in 2002, What is Beautiful? is a child’s (and an adults) introduction to an area know in philosophy as aesthetics. How do we know what is beautiful and what is not beautiful. Boritzer explores the tangible and the intangible aspects of our world of beauty – not telling, but asking us to consider the possibility that beauty may be a sometimes forgotten state of mind, there to be realized not only by our perceptions, but also by our actions and ways of being in this world with each other.

Coming to California from New York City 25 years ago, Boritzer honed his child-mind sensitivity skills with his sister’s children and the children of his many friends. Asked what started his children’s book quest, he responded “My 7-year old niece started asking me some very difficult “life questions.” Early on, I decided to try to take them on as a writer. Boritzer asks guided questions rather than giving pat answers to the moral dilemmas that he presents, encouraging kids in an ongoing interactive dialogue with parents and other adults to think for themselves. I see my job not as a preacher to children on these difficult subjects, but more like an exercise coach. I am trying to get the kids to exercise that muscle called the brain. Let them reason out what is right and what is hurtful, what is funny and what is not appropriate, and what is beautiful and what is MTV. Boritzer’s books have a special rapport, an honesty and directness that convey a sense of trust in the reader. “I think it is because I treat kids as intelligent “little people” who have their own concerns, feelings, thoughts and dreams and need to be treated with respect and sensitivity.”

The “What is?” series is published by Veronica Lane Books.

Can Hip-Hop be Holy?, From Hip-Hop to Heaven for Girls, and From Hip-Hop to Heaven

Appearances
Thursday afternoon – Gifford Youth Activities Center
Friday morning – Sebastian Middle School
Friday afternoon – Oslo Middle School
Saturday – Kids’ Street in the Festival Marketplace

Website: www.saibrowne.com

After working in the glittery, celebrity-influenced world of Hip-Hop since she graduated college, former Rap music executive Saideh Browne was forced to make some serious decisions about the direction of her life.

Saideh’s first nationally released non-fiction book, From Hip-Hop to Heaven (2004), details her desire to get into the Rap music industry, what happened when she got there and why she had to leave many parts of a lifestyle she loved alone. From Hip-Hop to Heaven for Girls (2007) reveals the steps Saideh took to rebuild her self-dignity, self-worth and pride after making a life-changing decision to no longer live under the influence of pop-culture and be true to who she is. With the assistance of other powerful women in the industry – they share their thoughts on how to handle “haters,” the importance of abolishing the “N” word and other quirky antidotes of empowerment for girls. With the rise of Holy Hip-Hop and Gospel Rap; Saideh’s most recent book, Can Hip-Hop be Holy? (2007) addresses the sensitive relationship between true Hip-Hop and its associated culture. She expounds on the need of separation between entertainment and reality while emphasizing the importance of empowerment from within versus empowerment from celebrities and their created world.

Saideh grew up when Hip-Hop was really building momentum; Kurtis Blow, Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew were popular. Queen Latifah made the ladies proud, and Hip-Hop life in New York City was good. After exploring the many facets of spirituality and what it truly means to have a peace filled life, it seemed as though she would be forced to abandon her Hip-Hop career; but through prayer, research and study, she has been able to continue to bloom in the culture in which she grew up. Today, Saideh speaks all over the country to tweens, teens and their parents on today’s hottest topics from a Hip-Hop perspective. She is proud of her college degree as well as all of her honors and achievements, but her true happiness is found as a wife and loving mom to her two teenage sons. She is a published author of many books, heads up two businesses and oversees several non-profits and youth initiatives.

River Dragon, written by a mother and daughter team, is an educational magical wand for the imagination. Created from twenty tons of cement and steel, Annie the Dragon measured 35 feet high and 65 feet long. When the statue collapsed overnight, the author team passionately penned a tale that would keep Annie and her four babies alive in the hearts of all who knew her and to enlighten those who didn’t. The irresistible fairy tale starts with Annie magically appearing on the Island. Legend says she was a statue by day and a fire-breathing dragon by night. The story continues with Annie’s challenging mission of finding a mystical land where only dragons live and humans will never know. River Dragon is rich on environmental schooling. The Kids’ Book Club Book is the first truly comprehensive guide to starting and maintaining a book discussion group for young people. The authors tackle three of the most common problems: how to encourage consistent participation, select books, and get interesting discussions going. The single best reference for both fledgling and well established youth book groups - Gail B. Hedges, President, Foundation for Children’s Books

A timely book and a great idea. What better way to cultivate an early desire to read than a kids’ book club? The Kids’ Book Club Book gives the full recipe for success: how to organize a club, which books to choose, what activities to keep it going, and how to involve reticent teens. – Mark Bauerlein, professor of English, Emory University, and former Director of Research and Analysis, National Endowment for the Arts

Judy Gelman, a public relations consultant, and Vicki Levy Krupp, a former high school history teacher, have participated in many book clubs. Both are avid readers and cooks. Seeking to combine their passion for books, food, and book clubs, they met over stacks of books and endless cups of coffee at a local sandwich shop, where The Book Club Cookbook was born.

They were motivated to write their second book, The Kids' Book Club Book, after librarians, parents, and teachers who attended their talks asked for a similar book for the growing number of youth book clubs across the country. During their eighteen months of research and writing on this trend, they were inspired by the enthusiasm and ideas of youth book club members, and the insights of notable children’s authors whom they contacted. The authors continue to participate in many book clubs, both with adults and children. They enjoy speaking about book clubs, and appreciate their ongoing conversations with book and food enthusiasts across the country.

They both live with their families in the Boston area.

Gerald’s most recent award is from the Florida Magazine Association for his column “Pine Island Soundings” about life on a barrier island.

Hausman is a frequent storyteller at college writers programs and at young authors’ conferences. Recently, he performed at the Young Authors Conference in Kaiserslautern, Germany, as a guest of Department of Defense Dependent Schools. His lively presentations, complete with a myriad of sound effects, have earned him praise from storytellers, speakers, writers, and listeners. Here is what some listeners have said about Mr. Hausman’s live storytelling…

“Gerald Hausman belongs to the fine tradition of literary naturalists. He steals bits of nature and plants them in type, building each column image by image until we see and feel the world the way he sees and feels it. The images invariably build to meaning, like the best poetry, and the meaning is tied to a sense of place. However glorious Pine Island may be, these columns reap a second harvest.” The Florida Magazine Association’s citation for Best column 2005

“Your students are indeed fortunate to have someone in their midst who can communicate enthusiasm for learning – the greatest lesson a school could ever teach.” Fred Rogers/Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood

Through his 30 year career as chaplain and minister, Ben Keckler has listened to the stories of many hurting people, young and old. He provides a listening heart for those who need to express their feelings of sadness, anger, and loneliness. He journeys with them as their companion while they share their stories, guiding them to deepened personal awareness and enouraging them to validate all feelings as appropriate expressions for life’s tough travels.

Realizing that our culture encourages us to shut down the expression of our feelings at a young age, the Express Yourself series was created. True stories, written in verse, help children learn to name and claim their feelings. The outward expression of feelings leads to emotional health. Accepting that it is “ok” to have both darker feelings (anger and sadness are two examples) along with brighter feelings (such as joy and hope) helps children grow into stable, healthy adults.

Ben Keckler is Director of Chaplaincy at Hendricks Regional Health in Danville, Indiana. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a clinical member of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Ben listens to the songs of hurting souls as he sits with people in the painful mements of their lives. His 30 year career includes ministry with congregations, teaching at a theological seminary and four challenging years as chaplain at a children’s home for emotionally disturbed teenagers. His undergraduate degree is from Indiana University in the field of elementary education. His graduate studies include a divinity degree from Winebrenner Theological Seminary and clinical residency work at Clarian Health Parners. At Hendricks Regional Heath, he focuses on cancer and bereavement support with specific attention to individuls facing complex transitional issues reated to health and grief.

Leslie has taught dolphins language in Hawaii, measured the effects of global warming in Trinidad and Tobago, and helped preserve a bird sanctuary on the island of Majotica, Spain. Over 800 products featuring these nature based designs have been selling in both Japan and the United States.

She has written and illustrated nine children’s pcture books, for publishers around the world, including Penguin Putnam and Candlewick Press in the USA, Kodansha in Japan, and MacMillan and Walker Books in the UK. The characters from her books have been in development, both in Europe and in the USA, to be made into animation. The Pip The Penguin Series of lift-the-flap board books have been translated into several languages, and are sold in over 60 countries. Snail Boy was published by Candlewick Press and Walker Books in the UK in 2003. There are four books about Tucker, her West Highland White Terrier: Tucker Flips!, Tucker Over The Top, Tucker off His Rocker, Ho Ho Ho Tucker!, and the newest ones, Tucker’s Spooky Halloween and Lucky Tucker. Tucker is currently under contract with Candlewick Press to be made into an animated series.

Leslie McGuirk grew up in Bronxville, New York, and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied fiction writing. She did not receive any formal training in art, and her picture books were rejected for thirteen years before finally getting published in Japan. Her experiences with rejection, and her desire to keep her creativity alive, gave her an unusual perspective on the process of having a creative life. Her workshop on this topic is called The Quest for Inspiration, which she has taught to groups such as corporate CEO’s as well as underprivileged school students. Her belief is that we all need to rekindle our personal creativity. If we re-learn how to wake up our sensory selves, she believes our lives wil be richer and more rewarding. Her book based on her workshops is called Baloney Ponchos and Other Recipes for Inspiration.

In Tecate, Mexico, Leslie is a regular guest presenter at the world famous Rancho La Puerta Spa, where her class is a big hit. She also speaks regularly at the Golden Door spa in Escandido, California, and the Red Mountain spa in St. George, Utah. She also taught on a Silver Seas cruise ship traveling around South America.

Her illustrations have been frequently used in the advertising world. Her clients have included Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Proctor and Gamble, Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, Harvard University, and NTT.

It took something truly remarkable to save the 1981 Major League Baseball season from being remembered only as the year of the players’ strike. It took the Los Angeles Dodgers: Fernandomania and Sorda and Garv and Bake and the Penguin. It took three amazing October comebacks to beat the Houston Astros, the Montreal Expos and, finally, the New York Yankees, avenging Dodger World Series losses to the Yankees in 1977 and 1978. Rick Monday was right in the middle of that magical Dodger season. His recollections and conversations with teammates provide a behind-the-scenes view of one of the most amazing teams and seasons in baseball history in Rick Monday's Tales from the Dodgers Dugout.

Rick Monday is a former center fielder in Major League Baseball and is currently a broadcast announcer. From 1966 through 1984, Monday, a center fielder for most of his career, played for the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics (1966-71), Chicago Cubs (1972 – 76) and Los Angeles dodgers (1977 – 84). He batted and threw left handed. In a 19-season career, Monday compiled a .264 batting average with 241 home runs and 775 RBI’s. He was selected an All-Star in 1968 and 1978.

Soon after his retirement as a player, Monday became a broadcaster for the Dodgers. He began in 1985 by hosting the pregame show and calling play-by-play on cable TV. From 1989-92, Monday moved further south to call San Diego Padres games alongside Jerry Coleman, replacing outgoing announcer Dave Campbell. He was also a sports anchor at KYYV for a time in the 1980s. In addition he served as a color commentator for CBS-TV at the College World Series championship game in 1988. Monday rejoined the Dodgers in 1993 (replacing the late Don Drysdale), and as of 2004 is one of the primary play-by-play announcers, calling most of the Dodgers’ radio broadcasts. Monday, since 2005, has handled mostly the analyst role, with Charley Steiner handling most of the play-by-play, except during road trips outside the National League West Division, in which Steiner broadcasts the game on television.

Adventures on Amelia Island: A Pirate, a Princess, and Buried Treasure continues the escapades of the Johnson family as they spend their spring break on Amelia Island during the annual Isle of Eght Flags Shrimp Festival. Thrilling stories of ghosts, pirates, and buried treasure on this historic northeast Florida island set the stage for a story full of colorful characters, humorous situations, and a youthful spirit of adventure.

Voices in St. Augustine is a story about a 14 year old boy who discovers a mysterious connection to the past, while searching for a topic for his 8th grade history project. On a visit to St. Augustine, Florida, the “Nation’s Oldest City”. Joey Johnson becomes intrigued with an abandoned house and some voices he hears coming from its garden. His curiosity to find the sources of these voices leads him to discover some new things about himself, as well as the people who lived there years ago. As the story unfolds, not all of Joey’s questions are answered. However, he does develop an appreciation for history, as he finds numerous connections to the people from the past.

“After saving the world in The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp, our regular-guy hero is unceremoniously returned to foster care in Knoxville, Tenn. Hounded at school as a freak, living with wretched “professional” foster parents, Alfred is bored and depressed. He believes he’s hit bottom until he is kidnapped, first by rogue OIPEP agent Mike Arnold, then by the Office of Interdimensional Paradoxes and Extraordinary Phenomena itself, at which point his classmates’ harrassment seems idyllic by comparison. For reasons Alfred doesn’t immediately understand, his presence is vitally necessary to foil Arnold, who, after being fired by OIPEP, stole two ancient artifacts from the agency’s vault: a ring belonging to King Solomon, and a vessel containing thousands of demons that have been locked inside for 3,000 years (and are really pissed off about it). Teamed with Op Nine, OIPEP’s top agent, Alfred heads out on a whirlwind mission to recover the artifacts, traveling to the Sahara, Chicago and home again as the planet erupts in his wake. The emotional core of this novel involves likeable Alfred’s unresolved issues about the death of his mother at age 12, and his sense of loss Is palpably heartbreaking. The villain Arnold’s issues remain far murkier, his motivation subsumed by the same Hollywood action-flick pyrotechnics-explosive showdowns, multiple near-brushes with death-that made the first book a hit with kids who might otherwise be playing video games.” Publishers Weekly, April 2nd

Rick Yancey has been a favorite of critics and fans alike for his first releases: A Burning Homeland and Confessions of a Tax Collector. Rick’s latests novels are the young adult hit The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp and The Highly Effective Detective, the first in a mystery series named by Entertainment Weekly as the hottest mystery title this summer. Rick’s work has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA today, and the Boston Globe, among others.

Rick’s young adult creation, Alfred Kropp, has firmly established him within an entirely new demographic. Thrusting Arthurian legend into the 21st Century, the movie rights to The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp were recently sold to Warner Brothers Pictures and Akiva Goldsman, producer of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and screenwriter for The Da Vinci Code.
